Volcanic Landforms 3.3

Vocabulary:

Shield Volcano: a gently, sloping mountain gradually built from lava flows.
Cinder Cone: a steep, cone-shaped hill or mountain.
Composite Volcanoes: tall, cone-shaped mountains in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash.
Caldera: a huge hole left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain.
Volcanic Neck: forms when magma hardens in a volcanoes pipe.
Dike: magma that forces itself across rock layers.
Sill: when magma squeezes between layers of rock.
Batholith: a mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cools inside the crust.
Dome Mountains: forms when rising magma is blocked by horizontal layers of rock.

Outline:

  • Volcanic Landforms
      • form- lava builds up mountains
      • form- buildup of magma beneath the surface.
  • Landforms from lava and ash
      • materials formed from magma- shield, composite, cinder-cone volcanoes- lava plateaus
    • shield volcanoes
      • shield volcanoes
    • cinder-cone volcanoes

    • Calderas
      • caldera
  • Soils from Lava and Ash
      • hard surface of lava breaks down soil
      • volcanic soils- riches in the world
      • volcanic ash breaks down- releases potassium, phosphorus
  • Landforms from Magma
      • features from magma- necks, dikes, sills, batholiths and dome mountains
